This disc is both a rock critic's fondest dream and worst nightmare--a record that's so lovely and special that it nearly defies description. Perhaps this goes a ways to explain why a wonderful band like Eleven is not a household name--it really isn't quite like anyone else; and, unfortunately, a derivative sound forges an easy path to success.
Although this original, eclectic alt-rock trio has been around for a decade, if they've earned any fame beyond cult status, it's as Chris Cornell's partners-in-creativity on his recent solo project. It's a nice credit, but this CD is where the group's talent really soars. These adventuresome melodies walk the same terrain as Revolver and White Album-era Beatles, and not-so-readily remembered sources as 10cc, exuding that same fascination with the blending of sound and mood.
Each number exists on several levels; a finely, textured, carefully measured song like "You're Not Alone" can be pretty, a bit foreboding and/or warmly eerie on subsequent listens. Same with "It's Okay," with its Middle-Eastern-influenced intro, lighthearted pop melody, and lyrics which are both anxious and nonchalant--it never hits you the same way twice. Natasha Shneider might add classically baroque keyboards to a tune, or guitarist Alain Johannes might throw in a flamenco-style flair. This album is loaded with sonic surprises.
Although it does bare its teeth with the high volume and odd syncopated accents of "Cool Cruel Baby," Eleven has laid back from the aggression occasionally exhibited on their last disc, 1995's Thunk. But sonic onslaughts are unnecessary here. Most rock 'n' roll is like a Big Mac--you wolf it down quick. Eleven is more like the finest prime rib--something to gloriously savor.
